Youth Programs: Focus on the Pursuit of Excellence

The Sports Medicine & Science Institute and Humanitarian Resource Institute are expanding health education initiatives targeting youth.  Programs are conducted by Stephen M. Apatow,  international coach for Olympic and sport development programs, and founder of the nonprofit organization Humanitarian Resource Institute.

Apatow's experience includes research and development of programs for thousands of dancers and athletes across the United States as well as extensive work with youth programs across America, during the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information 6000 mile cycling initiative for substance abuse in 1990 (www.cycleacrossamerica.org) and Run Across America Campaign in 1993 (www.runacrossamerica.org). Both projects were completed in conjunction with his intensive training program for international competition in the sports of cross country skiing and rowing during the 80's and early 90's.

Humanitarian Resource Institute feels that this is a unique opportunity for all young people to gain exposure to instruction and insight normally reserved for a privileged few in Olympic development programs.

Program objectives include goal setting, awareness of the mechanics of the human body, steps needed to optimize performance and prevent injuries along with sports specific applications. In conjunction with these programs, HRI would like to see a long term support system coordinated by community leaders, local programs, arts centers and fitness facilities.

 (L) Specialized classes at the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, (R) Gymnastics Coaches Education Program, participants included Maria Filotova, member of the 1976 and '80 Soviet Union Olympic teams, and Sasha Kourbatov, former member of the Russian international team at GTC Gymnastics, Rochester, NY.
.
The goal is to help youth focus on the importance of the pursuit of excellence, reaching their potential in life and the benefits of active participation in community service.
