Dear Colleagues,

We are in the midst of contingency discussions associated with a concurrent International Economic Emergency  and International Public Health Emergency associated with the Novel A/H1N1 (recombinant Avian Influenza A H5N1).

GENEVA (AP) - The World Health Organization said Thursday that up to 2 billion people could be infected by swine flu if the current outbreak turns into a pandemic. The agency said a pandemic typically lasts two years. -- WHO: Up to 2 billion people might get swine flu: Breibart, 7 May 2009.

Definition: pandemic (an epidemic that is geographically widespread; occurring throughout a region or even throughout the world) -- Princeton WordNet.

Surveillance, containment and control are crucial as we watch geographic spread and population impact by (1) human spread via air travel, including human to animal (2) natural ecological factors such as migratory birds, as was noted with West Nile Virus and Avian Influenza A H5N1.  Geographic analysis and emergency measures must be optimized for all global regions, with emphasis on impoverished population bases without an adequate human/veterinary public health infrastructure
